Max Schmeling was born in 1905 and lived to the age of 100. He was a famous German fighter that was the Champion of the World between 1930-1932. His two fights with Joe Lewis in 1936 and 1938 were worldwide events.

In the 1936 fight, Schmeling knocked Joe Lewis out. In their rematch in 1938, Joe Lewis scored a technical knockout on Schmeling in the first round. During WWII, Schmeling was a member of the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) and Adolph Hitler used him to tout Aryan superiority.

This wind-up toy works very well. When wound, the arms move to deliver an uppercut to the tin boxing ball attached to a springy pole. There was an identical boxing toy featuring Joe Lewis issued at the same time. The unique mechanism controlling the boxer’s punches is worth seeing.

The toy is in very good condition with some expected paint loss on the red-painted punching ball due to the punching.
