This spiral-bound animated book was written by Helen Bannerman in 1899 with animation provided by Julian Wehr.

The book was published by Duenewald Printing Corporation and we would describe the condition of the book as being in fair condition because some of the spiral teeth are missing on the comb binder and the front and back covers show scuffing and edge wear.

With all that said, the fun part of this rare book is the four working pull tabs that move the illustrated figures. With respect to individual pages, all but one book page is in very good condition, but even that page is fully readable with no missing words.

Little Black Sambo was a South Indian boy, but through the years, Sambo became a controversial figure for what was to become the unflattering image of black people. An interesting fact that most people do not know is that Sambo's Coffee Shops and Restaurants was named for the two founders Sam & Bo so the name had nothing to do with the controversial image of Sambo.

The food chain still could not survive the association with the unrelated Sambo character from the book.
