- Description
The twenty very good condition chips featuring various cards have been increasing in value because they represent a tangible memory of Trump's Atlantic City Boardwalk failure.
The Harrah's Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino opened on May 14,1984. The hotel had 614 rooms, seven restaurants, a 750-seat showroom, and 60,000 square feet of casino space.
The casino performed poorly in 1985, and Trump blamed Harrah's for the poor performance. In May of 1986, Trump bought Harrah's interest for $70 million and added additional costly investments in expanding the hotel and casino, including purchasing additional adjacent land.
This Atlantic City expansion left Trump very vulnerable due to the high debt incurred to satisfy his grand vision for his hotel and casino.
In 1990, the Trump Castle Hotel & Casino had a very sharp decline in financial performance, mainly due to Trump's opening of another one of his hotels called the Trump Taj Mahal, which was only a mile away from Trump Castle.
The hotel financially struggled for another fourteen years, resulting in countless debt restructurings and debt holder issues. In September 2014, the hotel finally closed. The "The Art of the Deal" may have been lacking in this instance, and these chips help to document this fact.
