- Description
John Pemperton's Coca Cola brew in 1886 was formulated as a patent medicine marketed as a hangover remedy, hiccup cure and brain tonic. The original formula included cocoa leaves (cocaine) and kola nuts that contained the stimulant caffeine.
There was about 9 mg of cocaine in every glass of the original Coca-Cola. The kick each Coke drinker received from the caffeine and cocaine probably explained Coke's early success.
As Coca-Cola matured and was required to remove the cocaine from its formula, the company still wanted to continue marketing its syrup as a medicinal tonic that relieved nausea, vomiting and even cold ailments.
The two empty prescription bottles of Coca-Cola syrup were filled by Ogle Rexall Drugs of Dublin, Texas and People Service Drug Stores of Pennsylvania, respectively. The third, amber bottle of coke syrup is more than 1/2 full and was filled by Shop-Rite Drugs of Rockaway, NY.
