- Description
This very rare English-made coin-operated machine was manufactured by Samson Novelty Ltd. located in London in the 1930's.
The heavy steel machine has welded wall hanging mounts attached. The machine measures 25" tall, 21-1/2" in width, and 10-1/2" in depth. When a 6-pence coin is inserted, you turn the crank and hear some chicken noises as a white egg drops out.
The machine is labeled with the words "New Laid Eggs From The Farm." The last machine we saw like this sold for over $3,500 about ten years ago. We tested the crank after placing a 6-pence coin in the coin slot (we will give the buyer the 6-pence coin), and the mechanism seemed to be working.
We believe the machine could use a good internal cleaning and oiling upon inspection of the inside of the machine after we removed the metal sidewall that was appropriately attached with chicken wire. We do not have a key to the machine, but the side panel is easy to remove for access.
The rooster and small hens can be properly arranged in the front viewing window via access through a wood door that flips up on the inside of the machine by the egg ramp. A marble-like egg is also included with the machine.
The metal on the machine is in good condition, but there is a need to sand and repaint the orange hen house roof and lower foundation due to paint loss and paint cracking. The original color of what is now painted orange was likely red.
The machine was made from very strong steel, so there are very few dents or blemishes on the metal.
A mechanically minded buyer who desires to properly decorate the viewing window with feathered imitation chickens and hens while reconditioning this rare machine would be an ideal match for this lot.
