- Description
The heavy hand painted plaster store display features an Indian Chief touching a "Moc-Sans" leather loafer of a suited gentlemen resting his shoe on an Indian drum. Most people do not realize that Jarman Shoe was the start of the largest shoe manufacturer in the world that many now know as Genesco.
Genesco currently is the manufacturer of Johnston & Murphy shoes. In 1924 the Jarman Shoe Company was founded by two gentlemen (James Jarman & William Wemyss) who were former salesmen for Carter Shoes located in Nashville, TN.
In 1931 they renamed Jarman Shoe to General Shoe Company, and in 1939, the company went public. In 1959, the company changed its name to Genesco.
The heavy plaster wall hanging is approximately 26" high and 18" in width. In addition to the wall hanging, an original store poster featuring the scene from the plaster is included and such a poster was made for the stores that still operated under the name Jarman Shoes for Men.
According to the poster, "Moc-Sans" sold for $6.85 to $8.85. The condition of both items are excellent.
