- Description
Campbell’s Soup sponsored the Amos ‘n’ Andy radio show starting in 1938 until 1943. The radio show ran from 1928 to 1955. In 1930, a Amos ‘n’ Andy movie was released with the stars Charles Correll (Andy) and Freeman Gosden (Amos) filmed in blackface. From 1951 to 1953 a television show was adopted from the radio show theme. This fine advertising poster is a reminder that loveable celebrities can sell most products to the public regardless of race or religion.
One could only imagine how hard it was for Campbell’s Soup to become one of the largest food purveyors in the world at 7 ½” cents per can of tomato juice. The interesting thing about this poster is that it advertises tomato juice but the graphic shows the highly recognized can of tomato soup.
