These polaroid goggles were used in 1946 by an observer of the July 1, 1946, nuclear test to determine what happened to naval ships when a nuclear weapon went off.  More than 42,000 scientists, reporters, and United Nations representatives observed the nuclear test.

Over 90 ghost ships were used, some loaded with live animals like pigs and rats to study the effects of the nuclear blast and radioactive fallout in the target area.  The goggles are in good shape, the red fold-down lens are working and the clear lenses appear to have dark spots from viewing the blast.
