The Christian Heurich Brewing Co., the maker of Senate Beer and Ale was founded in Washington D.C. in 1872.

The brewery's sales grew rapidly during the period 1917 to 1923 but as a result of the pressure from the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, the Anti-Saloon League and eventually prohibition, the brewery closed.

In 1934 the brewery began to produce beer again, but the company's sales never recovered and in 1956 the company shut its doors.

The 5" diameter ash tray has a chrome base that holds a die cut image of two Senate beer bottles and one ale bottle. Lit cigarettes would rest between the bottles.

Underneath the bottles is the name "Chr. Heurich Brewing Company-Washington D.C." The condition of the ashtray is very good with some minor spots on the chrome due to use.
