This rare doll and carriage was first patented in 1867.  The words W.M.F Goodwin with two patent dates (1867 & 1868) remains clearly written on the back panel of the stroller.

This clockwork toy was named Goodwin’s Patent Walking Doll.  The clockwork motor is hidden under the carriage seat and it drives the rear axle of the carriage to propel and attach the doll forward. As the carriage moves, the dolls' jointed legs move up and down to simulate the motion of the doll walking and pushing the carriage.

There are tiny studs in each heel of her boot that helps the feet maintain grip. The walking mechanism works best on a rougher surface like sidewalk concrete. When tested, the winding mechanism worked very well, and the spring was tight. The outside of the painted red carriage is in wonderful condition with all painted lines and decorations showing well. The inside of the carriage only was made with a coat of white paint and this paint has faded and does show some normal wear.

The placement of a baby in the carriage normally covers this area. The doll has her original dress, and black stockings but other than the expected fading the dress and shoes are in very good condition after 140 years. The doll's head is made of pressed cloth very similar to the way paper-mache is made.

There is some paint loss on the doll's black hair and normal paint fading on the face. The detailed hands are in wonderful condition. This is a wonderful wind-up doll that will always evoke pride in ownership
